1960s carnival float campaigns to save railway station

This 1960s carnival float was designed in an attempt to save Kenilworth’s railway station. Albion Street resident Derek Poulton, 70, remembers staff at Common Lane engineering firm Arden Products joining the procession on their train-themed float. He said: “At that point they were threatening to close the railways down. We didn’t manage to save Kenilworth station - and now everyone is protesting about the fact it was closed.” He is keen to hear from anyone who recognises the Arden employees in the picture, which was probably taken at the back of the Brays car park near Kenilworth Castle. Girls Training Corps The second picture, which also belongs to Mr Poulton, is of the Kenilworth Girls Training Corps. His wife, then Jean Wrist, is among the girls photographed. He said: “They had the corps in the aftermath of the Second World War - it was similar to the cadets. All these girls were pupils at the old senior school in Priory Road.” The picture was taken in either 1949 or 1950.
