Old folks revel in town's carnival atmosphere (July 2005)

Kenilworth Old Folks Club played up to the crowds as part of the huge carnival float procession in 1955.

Kenilworth Old Folks Club taking part in the town's carnival in 1955Revellers lined the streets and watched out of houses windows, including number 31 High Street which was home to Martha Nixon, pictured in the centre with the bowler hat.

Polly Evans, who was at Mrs Nixon's house when this photograph was taken, said: "We didn't have televisions or computer games then so this was virtually our Christmas in the summer. The atmosphere of the carnival was fantastic - it had stopped for many years during and after the war so people were determined to make the most of it."

The Nixons had their own plumbing and decorating business and ran Nixon hotel, which is Clarendon House hotel today.

Mrs Evans, of Wall Hill Road, Corley Moor, added: "I came across this old photograph by accident. I recognise Martha Nixon and I'm sure people could recognise who the others are."
