Murals bring a touch of cheer
A Warwickshire artist was inspired by his four-year-old son to set up a business painting murals to help stimulate children's imagination.
Paul Rothwell-Sykes of Bishops Itchington has just started his company kiddi-winks, bedroom and playroom artworks.
Paul said: “In essence, kiddi-winks is about developing a child’s imagination and creating a fun and magical place to be.
“The inspiration behind kiddi-winks was my little boy of four recognising that he was at the stage where his imagination was coming into play.
“I wanted to create some fun and excitement for him in his bedroom; so I set out painting his favourite hero, Peter Wolfsbane from the children’s movie The Chronicles of Narnia. He loves it.”
Paul has done some work for the Leap Frog nursery in the village, which recently merged with Busy Bees. His son Ellis attends the nursery.
Paul added: “I have a great relationship with them, knowing almost all the staff. I had been talking to the manager Tracey Haynes about my plans to set up kiddi-winks artworks and Tracey offered to help by inviting me to paint a mural for the pre-schoolers.”
Paul will paint single images or complete themed rooms, aiming to bring favourite character to life, such as Bob the Builder, Dora the Explorer, The Gruffalo etc.
He uses a high quality water-based acrylic paint. All colours are lightfast, permanent and insoluble when dried, making them high resistance to fading. He can also use children’s own designs as a base.
Costs for individual characters or objects range from £50 plus materials. Full wall murals are based upon a daily rate of £198 plus materials.
Paul has CRB Enhanced certification to work with children. He has recently completed a mural on a shed for the Whitnash Methodist Pre-School.
