Canoeing team hope to deliver a huge donation

A TEAM of Leamington men will be counting on the luck of the Irish as they attempt to paddle across both parts of the Emerald Isle for charity.

The 13-strong ‘Irish Deliverance’ team, led by Jon Devaney , aims to make the 372-mile trip in five Canadian canoes to raise funds for Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

The challenge will begin at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland next Friday and the team then plan to paddle through Lough Neagh and Lough Erne.

After driving across the border into The Republic of Ireland, they will pass through Enniskillen and down the river Shannon towards Limerick, their final destination, on Sunday September 2.

Organiser Jon Devaney said: “We have been practising for months and the team have reached peak physical fitness, ready for the rivers, loughs and Guinness of Ireland.

“The Hope and Anchor is our Glorious-Endeavours HQ, where we are busy selling our charity challenge T-shirts.”

This could be the first time anyone has ever attempted such a challenge but Mr Devaney and his team are no novices when it comes to extraordinary charity events.

Last year he, his brother David and their friends Jim Pittaway, Steve Massey and Paul Bannan, set of from the Hope and Anchor pub in Hill Street and completed the gruelling 10,000 mile Mongol Rally.

Travelling In two Peugeot 106s bought from scrap, teams Gobi 1 Kenobi and Yak2D2 achieved their goal with only one tyre puncture during the entire trip, raising more than £7,000 for the air ambulance.

Charlotte Parker, press officer for the charity, said: “We are really pleased that this group has yet again decided to do a challenge in aid of us we look forward to them raising even more. Every donation we receive goes towards keeping our lifesaving service in the sky”
