After hours and hands-on cookery lessons help give school a healthy approach

CHILDREN at a Leamington school are celebrating its healthy school status by honing their cooking skills during extra-curricular activities.
The year four pupils at St Paul’s Primary School in Upper Holly Walk have been making various delicious dishes at an after-school cookery club, which has run every Thursday since September.

Equipment for the sessions has been provided by the colle
ction of Sainsbury’s school vouchers by parents, which has allowed the budding chefs to make pizza, pasta dishes and Christmas puddings.

Healthy schools co-ordinator Gail Duxbury said: “They just love the hands-on experience.

“Children do not seem to get the same experience of cooking at home as I did.

“Just things like washing up are something they may never have had to do and it is good for them to realise things don’t just come in a packet.”

Year five pupils will be next to benefit from the club this term as they try their hand at making flans, lattice tarts, quiches and macaroni cheese.

Headteacher Pete Farrell expressed his pride at the school being given healthy school status by the government.

He said: “We are delighted to have gained this status. It isn’t just about eating healthily it is about physical exercise and the opportunities for after school activities.

“We offer healthy school meals which are provided by Warwickshire County Council caterers so the children can have sensible choices at lunchtime.”
