Telford Junior School has been awarded National Healthy School Status.
Headteacher Richard Siviter said: “It means the school has done well in its job to promote healthy lifestyles amongst our 350 pupils. We are really pleased to have this award.”
The school had to show it was good at teaching personal, social and he
alth education, that it encourages healthy eating and good levels of physical activity and provides for the emotional health and well-being of its pupils.
And Telford has, for the second year running, won an Active mark for exceptional delivery of sport .
Sarah Powell is the school's health promotion co-ordinator, and has been the inspiration behind a lot of healthy ideas for pupils.
These include setting up a fruit scheme and milk scheme for break times, and encouraging children to drink the right amount of water during the school day. She has set up a school council and a fun activity based sports day.
Mr Siviter said: “Every child in the school can now have a drink of milk in a carton and a pack of fruit, washed and peeled and ready to eat at break time.
“The milk and fruit is delivered to us every morning and a lot of the children really enjoy it. The children are also allowed to bring water bottles into school to have on their desks in the classroom so this encourages them to drink more water. We have water coolers in the corridors so they can fill up their bottles.
“The school council has been very successful and is at the moment working on plans for a quiet area for the playground.
“They have been very good at coming up with ideas for a fun activities sports day which encourages all children to have a go at different activities.
“They take part in classes so they are with their friends. We have the competitive running races as well for those who enjoy it.
“We have the normal sporting activities at school and run girls and boys football teams with coaching from Coventry City FC, and we have dance classes on a Monday.
“Every child in the school has two hours of sport a week. They also enjoy swimming and we are lucky to have our own swimming pool here.”
Mr Siviter said: “This has very much been a whole school initiative, supported by children, staff , parents and governors.”
