A labour of love for Leamington footballer Martin Hier is set to provide a family in Coventry with a dream home.
The 32-year-old Brakes defender had always dreamt of building his own house and he turned that into a reality last year after buying a plot of land in Warwick Avenue, Earlsdon.
But his 'grand design' adventure began long before building work started in January 2008.
Martin said: "I saw the plot was available in the spring of 2007.
"It was a piece of land that was a side garden to the neighbouring building.
"There was already a design for a bungalow but I wasn't happy with it.
"I went away on holiday to Ibiza with my wife Rhian in July and I was sketching out designs on the beach for a family home."
Planning permission was granted in December that year and contracts were exchanged on the purchase of the property three days later.
Then the work really began.
Martin had designed a striking property that blended modern technology with character features, befitting the quality of the location.
Its features include state-of-the-art thermal insulation and heating, an oak staircase and a side courtyard, a superb fitted kitchen as part of a breakfast and family room, a study/playroom, dining area and an outstanding living room with a feature brick fireplace.
It also benefits from four double bedrooms, two of which have en-suites, and a further family bathroom.
Outside, there is a long mature garden.
Martin project-managed the building programme with his father, David, and they employed various tradesmen to carry out the work.
Martin said: "I thought I would get my hands dirtier than I did.
"But it was a big enough job to manage.
"It has been a lot of hard work and I can't thank my dad enough but it was all worth it because it's something I've always wanted to do.
"I just hope whoever buys it gets as much pleasure out of it as us.""
Work is now complete and the result is stunning.
Martin Davies, of estate agents Shortland Horne, said: "This is a truly outstanding property – a real life grand design.
"Martin has put his heart and soul into this home and that really comes across in the result."
The property is on the market for £750,000.
