Any donated tinned goods will be given to the Salvation Army in Leamington.

The harvest supper will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at 7pm in the village and will be an opportunity to hear about Ian Host's experience walking along the pilgrims' rou
te through Spain to Santiago de Campostela.

WI: A members' evening will take place on Tuesday, October 9 at 7.30pm in the village hall.

SPORTS QUIZ: This quiz will take place on Friday, October12 starting at 8pm in the sports and social club. Teams of up to four people can enter with prizes for the winners. The cost is £5 per person, which includes fish and chips (£3 without food). Entries should be made to Mel Codd on 640121 by today (Friday).

LOCAL HISTORY GROUP: It is plain to see why the BBC television series One Man and His Dog was so popular - watching a skilled shepherd and an intelligent dog working together is a sight few can resist. The first lecture of the autumn season of the Local History Group was by David Smith, an experienced shepherd, and A Shepherd's Tale gave his audience many new insights into this perennially interesting subject.

Mr Smith described the history of shepherding, and how a partnership is forged between dog and owner. With the help of well-chosen slides, he brought the subject alive for the audience, describing among other things the long cross-country treks of the past with huge herds of sheep - something that would have been impossible without a well-trained dog. An historic photograph showed one of these great herds making their way down the steep high street of a Yorkshire town. As someone remarked, they wouldn't like to try that in Kineton today.

As well as giving the group a lively and stimulating talk, Mr Smith had brought along a number of artefacts connected with shepherding, including a storm lantern, and shepherds' crooks, one of which had an exquisitely carved hare on the horn handle. There were also samples of the wool from the various breeds he had discussed and some cheese made from sheep's milk, the delicious samples of which rounded off a most entertaining and instructive evening.

The next meeting of the group will be on October 19, in Kineton village hall, when Graham Lockley will talk about Railways of Kineton and District. As usual, visitors and new members will be sure of a warm welcome. Further particulars can be obtained from the secretary, Peter Ashley-Smith, telephone 01926 640545.

VICTORIAN EVENING: There is a meeting for all stallholders in The Swan on Monday, October 22 at 7pm. If people are not able to attend then both Gill at Flower Thyme and Sue at The Country Pursuit have the appropriate forms for booking. Originality is paramount and Victorian dress would be encouraged for the theme.

There will be a small charge of £5 per stallholder to go to Warwickshire Air Ambulance, but if stallholders want to contribute any more then all contributions will be appreciated. Stalls will be limited and kept on a first come first served basis. A couple of groups have already booked their stalls.

There will be a trophy for best dressed Victorian and also best Christmas display, as sponsored by Flower Thyme and The Country Pursuit. There will again be a raffle and sponsors for prizes are needed. Again all proceeds will go to Warwickshire Air Ambulance.

PRIMARY SCHOOL: Kineton C of E (VA) primary school is holding an open evening on Thursday, October 4 for parents and pupils, the wider community and the media to promote itself as part of an initiative to raise its profile in South Warwickshire.

The open evening is being arranged by senior staff of the school and visitors will be able to see what goes on within the school and the wider roles the school governors and the active Parent Teacher Association – The Friends of Kineton Primary School, play in the day-to-day running of the school.

Boasting one of the largest primary school grounds in the county, the school is already famed as holding one of the most prestigious summer school fetes in the Midlands with all proceeds going to school fund-raising projects.

The July 2007 fete was no exception, with headline attractions, which included the Red Devils freefall parachute display team and a lavish flying display involving World War II aircraft and an army helicopter display team. Corporate sponsorship from the local Guy Salmon Land Rover dealership, and a record attendance, raised more than £5,000 for a new outdoor classroom.

September saw the completion of the fabulous new Kineton Playgroup building which is located on the school's site and is now being used for breakfast clubs and after school clubs providing a welcome addition to on-site childcare out of school hours.

It also provides an ideal introduction to the school for pre-school children who attend the playgroup and excellent links with the reception class. For further information please contact the school office on admin@3308.wgfl.net or 01926 640397.
