WHILE walking through the Jephson Gardens in Leamington I thought I had found three elephants recently stolen from an unknown Indian restaurant but, on closer inspection, I was exceptionally disappointed to find I wasn't to be rewarded with my body weight in free chicken byriani but was, in fact, being rewarded by yet another eyesore of a statue that has been thrust upon Leamington folk.
I am honestly beginning to think that someone is being suckered into donating thousands of pounds to some (con)artist in return for what I can only best describe as 'tat'.

Firstly there was the bent blue tram rails outside the parish church and now the latest venture, located in the gardens, being a circular bench with three elephants incorporated into the circumference; I cannot see how this could be described as original art.

The elephants appear to have been purchased from some discount garden nursery store and then cemented in to the seats. It looks cheap and it looks shoddy; not the impression we want to give visitors to Leamington Spa. - Graham Downie, Warwick Place, Leamington.

Mr Downie needs to get his facts right.

Firstly (and I'm sure this can be confirmed by someone from the council) no public money was spent on the installation of the elephant seat sculpture. My impression is that the money came from an insurance claim.

Secondly, the sculpture is not a newly commissioned piece of work but was originally installed in the Royal Priors about 15 years ago. It was then moved to Spencer Yard a couple of years ago but was removed after one of the elephants was stolen by thieves. It would have been a waste of money to leave the remainder of the sculpture lying in a warehouse, unused, for years and years.

Thirdly, I don't know how many Indian restaurants Mr Downie has visited but they don't usually feature statues of elephants. I believe Mr Downie is confusing such decorative accoutrements with those often seen in Thai restaurants.

Personally I think the elephant seat is a pleasant addition to the Jephson Gardens.
