WARWICK District Council attracts much criticism when the public perception is that it is not delivering what is required. This is as it should be, but by the same token we should be as liberal with our praise when it produces something of real value.
I am referring to the recently opened Packmores Centre in Warwick, a facility requested by concerned residents that has the potential to be of real benefit to an all too often forgotten part of our shire town.
It is a very imaginative use of neglec
ted space and provides something long overdue for this old estate. As a former town and district councillor representing this area I attended many meetings highlighting the need for such a resource. I knew well that the Packmores had never enjoyed such a facility in my lifetime having been born and raised in Vine Lane well over 60 years ago.
Recently I had occasion to visit the centre created in the unused storage area beneath the flats at Sussex Court. Talking to Linda, who together with her colleague Kath, both of the district council, were two of the prime movers in setting up this project and Val a lady from CAB, who run sessions there, I learned of the range of activities available or potentially so at this brand new fit for purpose centre. I left promising to help spread the word, hence this letter.
The centre is bright and cheerful offering a contact point and meeting place for a seemingly endless range of agencies and activities. If you call in and do not see what you are looking for then you can get help, perhaps together with other likeminded residents, to start a group to serve your interests.
Mums and dads, children, senior citizens in fact anyone, if you live in the Packmores and you are looking to make friends, to join in activities, in need of help, advice, or just someone to talk to over a cuppa why not drop in. This amenity has certainly been a long time coming but now the district council have done their bit don't let this opportunity fade away through lack of interest make use of your centre, after all your taxes paid for it.
I often walk through the Packmores from my home in the Cape to St John's where my mother lives. The streets, the Pools, Priory Park the railway station bring back happy memories of growing up in this part of town. There was a great community spirit then, a true sense of belonging and it would be great if this could be rekindled.
I believe the centre could be a good starting place. - Roger Smith, Hanworth Road, Warwick.
