Puppet show ‘obscene’, says councillor

Puppetry of the Penis, coming to the Spa Centre.

A SHOW coming to the Spa Centre that involves puppeteers manipulating their genitals for comic effect has angered a Leamington councillor.

David Friend and Simon Moreley’s Puppetry of the Penis 3D, which takes the stage at the Newbold Terrace theatre on Wednesday night, is not appropriate for the town, according to district councillor Roger Copping (Lib Dem, Leamington Crown).

After making a complaint to the Spa Centre, he told the Courier: “I have had complaints from half a dozen constituents - all women. They are appalled that this sort of show should be shown at our Spa Centre, a family venue.

“This is Royal Leamington Spa. This sort of show is more suitable for a place like Blackpool. It contains full frontal nudity. It is highly obscene and in very poor taste.

“The Spa Centre is a venue which is paid for by the council taxpayer and we should have more control over the sort of shows they are putting on.”

Spa Centre manager Anthony Flint said: “This show has been on the rise for the last six or seven years and is a bona-fide piece of comedy theatre, which has won numerous awards and rave reviews across the globe.

“It does contain full frontal male nudity but we’re up-front about that in all our publicity. While I’m sorry if anyone is offended, we do have a responsibility to have a broad offer that appeals to a wide range of people.”

The show starts at 7.30pm. For tickets, call 334418 or visit www.royalspacentreandtownhall.co.uk
