Warwickshire Artists' new recruit work ranges from Holocaust to 'little poems'

Depicting Lithuanian experiences of the Holocaust and recreating a Gypsy caravan are some of the projects muralist Lynsey Cleaver has been working on.

The new recruit to Warwickshire Artists set up her own mural company Painted Interiors by Design in 2002.

As well as commercial art, the 32-year-old creates paintings - or "poetic illustrations" - using textiles, flaking paint, iron and fabric.

She said: "I like making things which are like little poems, which spark off memories or ideas.

"My work reflects an analysis of the inner and outer - what we project and what we hide, the balanced and the unbalanced, the hinged and unhinged side of ourselves, the fine line between the inside and the outside.

"The pieces are aimed at provoking thought and recognition through visual poetics."

Having never studied art at school because she feared it would not land her a job, Lynsey made a last-minute decision to go to art college and ended up taking a degree in fine art at Coventry University and a masters degree in the history of art.

Since setting up her business, she has travelled as far as Barbados to create murals for people.

She said: "I do some really wild stuff. Once a millionaire asked me to restore a Gypsy caravan and repaint it as it would have been originally. It's so varied."

Lynsey takes inspiration from Robert Morris, Joseph Cornell, Cornelia Parker, Jannis Kounelis, Robin Rhode and Marcel Duchamp.

The Rugby resident took part in the Leamington Studio Artists' exhibition at Warwickshire College this month.

In September Lynsey's work will be part of a 'living history' exhibition in Lithuania, for which she has created two boxes - each one representing an individual's experiences of the Holocaust.

She is also heavily involved in the Pump Room's forthcoming Amazing Chang exhibition, which celebrates the life and career of the famous Leamington magician Samuel Whittington-Wickes.

Lynsey's grandfather used to mow the lawn for the magician's wife.
