Parents in the Southam area have spoken out against plans to limit where their children can go to school.
Warwickshire County Council is proposing to reduce the catchment area of Rugby's two popular grammar schools - Rugby High School (for girls) and Lawrence Sheriff (for boys).

The move follows an Office of Schools Adjudicator ruling that it is affe
cting intake in Northamptonshire schools and turning some of the selective ones into "de facto secondary moderns".

But the new catchment area would exclude not only children in Northamptonshire, but also those in south east Warwickshire.

Tam Heap from Napton was one parent who voiced her objections at a Stratford East joint area committee meeting at the Grange Hall in Southam last Friday.

Her sons, Dougal, 15, and 11-year-old Edward attend Lawrence Sheriff. Their brother Samuel, nine, goes to the village primary school.

Mrs Heap said: "It seems like the county council took the adjudicator's report at face value and went for the easiest option without realising the impact it would have on areas outside the original catchment zone.

"We are perfectly happy for Samuel to go to Southam College, but to have to tell him he can't apply to the same school as his brothers seems very unfair.

"The county's idea of public consultation is putting something on the website, but how many people sit down and look at that every day?"

The committee - which comprises district and county councillors from around Southam and Wellesbourne - voted unanimously to keep parishes close to the Rugby boundary within the grammar schools' catchment area.

The motion was put forward by Coun Nigel Rock (Lib Dem, Stockton and Napton) and will be considered by the county council when making its final decision.

Coun Rock said: "The adjudicator's report said that all affected parties had been consulted and brought together. But clearly this is not the case as residents around Southam didn't even know about it.

"We can only presume the adjudicator didn't expect these areas would be affected.

He added: "I am pleased we have gained cross-party consensus on this issue and look forward to a change of heart on the proposals that threaten the element of choice for people bordering on Rugby district."

The committee asked that Napton, Southam, Upper and Lower Shuckburgh, Ladbroke. Priors Marston, Priors Hardwick, Long Itchington and Stockton be retained in the catchment area.

Consultation ends on March 6. For more information visit the schools and learning section at www.warwickshire.gov.uk
