Work on a £450,000 project to improve sports, youth and community services for Warwick people may start as early as mid-September.
Racing Club Warwick hopes to receive £83,500 from Warwick district council so it can start work on a scheme to provide a new clubhouse, improved pitch and meeting place for Air and Army cadets and Scouts.

Officials have recommended allowing the grant, citing the club's involvement in youth and sporting projects, and Warwick District Council's executive committee will discuss the scheme on Wednesday.
Former Racing Club chairman Jim Wright is in charge of community development. He believes the work will benefit the whole town.
He said: "The more young people have to do, the more it impacts on everyone.

"When young people are doing something worthwhile with their time they will not be annoying the neighbours or getting involved in less celebrated occupations."

If funds are granted, work will begin on September 15 and the first phase will be completed by April 2009. Racing Club has invested its own funds in the improvements, and funding will also come from the cadets and training corps.

Mr Wright hopes for support from councillors. He said: "We have put in a huge amount of hard work. The club has put in an enormous amount of time and money on getting this far.

"It means a variety of groups and organisations will be working from suitable, purpose-built accommodation and can deliver a variety of improvements to community life."

Warwick Town Council supports the club's plans, and gives £5,000 in grant money every year to the club.

Town clerk Derek Maudlin said: "The council sincerely hopes Racing Club Warwick is successful in recognition of the excellent contribution it makes to the community activities and sporting achievements of the town."

The scheme also has the support of Coun Chris White (Con, Warwick South), who is responsible for leisure policy. He said: "We are very supportive of the work Racing Club does. It is a great place for young people and does a tremendous amount of work for that part of the community."
