Aylesford School's headteacher has defended his school after it appeared to perform worse than others in the area in last week's league table.
The specialist language and music college, in Shelley Avenue, Warwick, achieved a value added score of 988.3 this year compared to 1009.2 in 2006 and 989.1 in 2008.

But Steve Hall is not disappointed with the results.

He said: "I'm not concerne
d at all as my value added score is satisfactory. There is nothing wrong with it.

"I don't see it as a halt in progress."

Value added scores show how much the school has done to improve children's achievement.

Schools scoring above 1000 have done better than might otherwise be expected, and schools scoring below 1000 have done worse than might otherwise be expected.

The score takes social and economic factors of a school's catchment areas into account

The total was lower than those achieved at Campion School in Sydenham Drive which scored 1032.8 and Myton School in Myton Road which scored 1000.1.

Mr Hall believes it is not a true reflection of students' abilities or an accurate way of measuring a school's performance.

He said:"It is different as there are not the same measures from year to year.

"It can be based on things such as free school meals or the number of boys versus girls."

The results table also shows 47 per cent of pupils at the school achieved five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C including English and maths.

This was a higher mark than Campion School which achieved a 31 per cent pass rate in this category.

Mr Hall added: "If parents want to see what the school is like the best way to assess it is to come in and look at the school.

"I am very pleased with the progress pupils are making. I am delighted."
