Extra patrols and a greater police presence are expected in Kenilworth for the next horse fair later this month.
Insp Richard Woodcock has said that whilst there is nothing to suggest the event will cause problems in the town, Warwickshire Police are currently reviewing the tactical options and staffing levels for the event.

The next fair is scheduled to take place at Thickthorn on September 28.

Insp Woodcock said: "There is nothing to suggest that this event will result in the widespread dissatisfaction expressed by residents when the last horse fair took place.

"However certain measures will be put in place to try to prevent unlawful encampments in the days leading up to the fair and an overt presence of additional police officers in the town to reassure the local community.

"The police are in close liaison with the multi-agency partners such as the councils and local businesses to ensure a joined up approach ensues with a consistent and considered response.

"The community are reminded that the police have no legal powers to prevent this type of event, where the landowner has invited the travelling community onto their land."

Concern is already mounting amongst residents following the problems linked to the last horse fair.

The Christian Convention, which was held after the fair, announced it has no plans to return to Kenilworth, but the fairs will continue.

Deputy mayor Coun Richard Davies, who is keen to keep peace in the town, said the sign advertising the event, which is already up outside Thickthorn, had sparked more concern.

He said: "This could be interpreted as being rather provocative bearing in mind the raw feelings the event gives rise to in the town, especially amongst people working in retail outlets.

"I am still receiving reports from people who were intimidated and frightened by the behaviour of the travellers last time."

In August, thousands of travellers descended on Kenilworth for one of the regular horse fairs held in the town.

But many said they were left 'fearing for their safety' and pubs were forced to close early for fear of trouble.

Residents and councillors are now calling for a total ban on events like this as many reported intimidating behaviour.
