A Sydenham pensioner was beaten up by a youth as he returned home with his wife from a night out yesterday.
The victim was punched to the ground and suffered "serious facial injuries" as he tried to defend himself near his front door in Ryland Close, at about 10pm.

His 6ft-tall attacker, described as wearing jeans, a dark tank top and a woollen baseball cap, had approached and demanded money.

He made off towards Fallow Hill.
The victim was taken to University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire.

Pc Paul McDermott said: "This appears to have been an unprovoked attack on an elderly man who has suffered serious facial injuries.

"We would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time of the assault and may have seen the offender hanging around to contact us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information should call Pc McDermott on 01926 684245 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
