Anger as Local Plan pushes out social housing scheme for Cubbington

Parish councillor David Saul says he is so “distraught” that a scheme for seven rentable social housing units on land in Coventry Road has had to be abandoned, that he has withdrawn all support for Warwick District Council’s plans for Cubbington.

The social housing project, which was due to begin this spring, would have seen the seven homes built on land owned by the Sir Thomas White Loan Charity. But the charity has now pulled out - shortly after the Local Plan had earmarked land where the village allotments now stand for 75 new homes.

Cllr Saul said: “What do I say when people ring me up and ask what happened to the social housing plan? They ask me, what do I do now? I haven’t got the answer.

“This is making it impossible for us to find space for social housing. We feel quite distraught.

“This is the thin end of the wedge. I think we will be faced with double the 75 houses earmarked for Cubbington. There is nothing to stop Thomas White from putting in an application for more.”

He added: “I have major concerns about the way the district council is handling the Local Plan. The properties built as part of the Local Plan are not going to be suitable for those with social housing needs. It’s heartbreaking to see families who don’t know which way to turn because we have left them high and dry.”
