Clampdown in Whitnash on illegal parking on the pavement

Illegal parking on the pavement has become such a problem in Whitnash, that the town’s neighbourhood police team has placed it as an issue of priority to tackle.

Police community support officer Steven Sample said that because parking on the pavement is illegal, those who continue to do so are being issued with parking tickets - and the Whitnash police team are no longer taking any excuses for such parking.

Among those most affected by the issue are people with pushchairs and prams and those who use mobility scooters, like Coppice Road resident Bob Parkes (pictured), who is disabled and depends on travelling by mobility scooter for independance.

He said: “The other day, a pizza delivery man parked his car completely on the pavement outside the Plough and Harrow pub. I had to sit and wait for him to come back before I could get past.

“On another occasion, I had to ride on the main road in Tachbrook Road because I could not get past a people carrier parked on the pavement. It’s dangerous.

“I have seen people with prams having problems as well. This is not just happening in Whitnash, but all over the place.”

Pcso Sample said: “At the Whitnash community forum, this has been identified as a priority issue for the town, because we have had so many complaints about it.

“Particularly around school-run times, people with buggies and mobility scooters are really struggling.

“We have issued tickets and we will carry on doing so, but people are saying that they did not know about this because they do not live in Whitnash.

“But it is illegal to park on the pavement. It is obstructing the highway.”

He added: “The message is that cars are for the road - that’s where they belong. The pavement is for pedestrians, who should not have to walk on the road.”
