As well as teaching in schools, the disruption on July 10 is likely to affect refuse collections, libraries, leisure centres, school dinners and many other services - as the staff who work at councils and schools across the area who are members of Unison have voted in favour of taking part in the national industrial action.

Tony Rabaiotti, the union’s West Midlands representative for local government staff, said: “We have a clear majority for strike action. Many of our members are low paid women earning barely above the minimum wage, who care for our children, elderly and vulnerable. They deserve better treatment than they have had at the hands of this Government. The employers must get back into talks immediately to avoid a damaging dispute.”
