Fenny Compton Scout Group is celebrating this week after they received £10,000 from the Awards for All Big Lottery Fund (BIG).

This will benefit more than 80 rural children aged between 6 and 18 who have joined Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers sections.

The Group was formed only in 2013 and has experienced rapid growth, requiring more equipment to support outdoor activities and give the young people as wide an experience as possible.

Members take part in their own fund raising activities such as supermarket bag packs, a Christmas postal service within local villages and a garage sale, but the Lottery award is an enormous and welcome boost.

With the funds, the Group will be purchasing a marquee, camping and expedition equipment and storage provision

Julian Leslie, group scout leader for Fenny Compton. said: ““It is great for a new Scout Group to receive such significant funding, it means that we can purchase the equipment required to provide a varied set of activities and create learning and development opportunities, but most importantly have fun.

Fenny Compton Scout Group aims to empower children to make a positive contribution to society through its weekly activities.

Community service is a key feature and the Group has assisted other local groups in the village, as well as supporting the church fete and taking part in the village Remembrance Parade.

Most children have already experienced hiking, climbing, sailing, canoeing, camping and swimming through the Group’s weekly meetings, working towards goals for their achievement badges.

None of this would have been available to the children without the group.
