Thanks to a £3,350 donation from former Leamington mayor and town councillor Yvonne Moore, the Alzheimer’s Society is able to offer free ‘singing for the brain’ sessions - taken from a programme devised by the charity for people with memory problems.

Participants will be encouraged to join in singing and rhythmic and gentle physical exercise and dancing to help promote their communication. The charity says this can help with articulation, concentration, focus and motivation, as well as improving mood and helping those taking part to feel good about themselves.

The sessions - led by Anna Perry, a musician and music teacher from Rugby, and Nardoff Robbins, music therapist at the Royal National College of Music in Manchester - will feature songs from different eras and styles.

Anna said: “My eyes have been opened to the unique potential of music allowing people with dementia to realise their capabilities and connect with others. I am looking forward to sharing my passion for music as a means to enabling social interaction and enjoyment in this music making opportunity.”

There are currently 1,500 people with dementia living in the Leamington and Warwick area - and this is predicted to increase.

The first ‘singing for the brain’ session takes place at the Brunswick Healthy Living Centre in Shrubland Street, Leamington, on Tuesday (February 4) from 10.15am to 11.45am. To find out more, call Sarah Monahan Dementia Support Manager on 888899 or email sarah.monahan@alzheimers.org.uk
