Harry Jenkins, 17, was selected at a performance event at Warwick Library, during which he beat off a high standard of competition from the other four finalists.

Harry said: “I am extremely excited to have been given the role because it gives me the opportunity to promote poetry to a wide range of people across the county, as well as boosting my own confidence in my poetry and performance.”

Harry will spend the next year writing and performing poetry around the county under the mentorship of writer Matt Black.

The Young Poet Laureate scheme is part of the Arts Council England-funded Warwickshire Poetry Voices project, run by Warwickshire County Council’s library service.

County council chairman Bob Stevens said: “We congratulate Harry on his well-deserved title. Warwickshire has some extremely talented young poets and this showed in the quality of the finalists who wrote excellent poetry and recited it with great authority at the selection event.”
