Long Itchington residents gathered en masse at the village's Co-op last week only to find that their petition to save their post office would not be accepted.

Villagers were told just after Christmas that the Heart of England Co-op will be closing the store’s post office counter.

Since then a campaign group has been formed and more than 1,000 people have signed the petition. Group member Christopher Purser said: “Not only did the Co-op management decline to come and accept their customers’ petition, they instructed store staff to refuse as well.

We’ll be writing to them again to question the rationale for their decision.”

MP Jeremy Wright has written to the Co-op’s bosses to show his support for the campaign.
