Gyspy camp ordered to leave Warwick

A Gypsy and Traveller camp has been ordered to leave Warwick after setting up in a public park last weekend.

The unlawful camp set up in an area of land known as Wedgnock Green on Sunday in what residents say has been the cause of fear, noise and disturbance for days.

Families in around six caravans are still in the public space off St Michael’s Road and Birmingham Road despite being served notice to leave by the council.

A Warwick District Council spokesperson said while they expect the Travellers to move on soon, they have been issued with a court date if this does not happen.

She said: “We are aware of Gypsy and Travellers in Warwick and officers have been on site to issue a letter giving notice to start the eviction process.

“That will be done through the courts if those responsible remain in place after the given date.

“In our experience we expect the matter to be sorted before this time.”

During the past week reports have since come in from parents, dog walkers and neighbours who say they have been too scared to use the space after seeing threatening behaviour and noise from the group.

One woman, who wished not to be named, complained of being chased by a dog, and of feeling too threatened by the men’s behaviour to return to the park with her children.

Anybody with complaints or concerns should contact Warwickshire Police on 101, or Warwick District Council.
