Leamington’s first ever comic convention will go ahead thanks to support which has “blown away” the event’s organiser.

Dan Mallier has thanked all those who have helped to get idea of the convention off the ground through donations to reach and exceed the £1,500 funding target and by promoting the online campaign.

Mr Mallier, 32, said: “The idea for the event was just a bit of a ‘lightbulb moment’ for me while I was driving to work and I thought I’d just see if anybody was interested and it just snowballed from there.

“I’ve been blown away by the support of local people whether that has been them sharing the page online or making donations or even offering to give up their time to hand out flyers.

“I want to thank the community for this, the aim for me is to try to create something which will leave my mark on the town and can hopefully be enjoyed by others for years to come.”

Mr Mallier is still appealing for donations to take funds for the event up to £2,000 to make it even bigger and better.

Such has been the demand from people wanting to take part in the convention, which takes place on Saturday October 18, the organiser has had to change the venue from the Leamington Live Art and Music Project (LAMP) to the Pump Room in the Parade.

He said: “That has happened purely because of the interest that has been shown in the event.

“I have been inundated with message from people saying they want to promote their work.

“The LAMp is a really nice and intimate venue, and they have been very supportive, but we needed somewhere bigger.”

Mr Mallier is unsure how well attended the event will be but 222 people have said on Facebook that they will be coming and if it is a success the convention could take place annually.

Announcements about the event will be made in the coming months. www.indiegogo.com/projects/leamington-comic-con
