Symbols from the 1960s have been created by Campion School pupils in the build up to a day of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Sydenham.

Psychedelic camper vans, yellow submarines, flowers and the faces of rock ‘n’ roll icons the Beatles were among the items from the 60s which the pupils placed on the roundabout in Sydenham Drive this week.

The display, supported by County Councillor Matt Western who helped set it up, serves as a prelude to a day marking 50 years since the first houses of the Sydenham estate were built on a farm site in 1964.

A wide range of events have been planned at various locations around Sydenham on saturday July 5 including the Sydni Centre off Marlowes Walk, Sydenham Primary School, St Mary’s Church, Fallow Hill Residents Association, Campion School and at Asda where The Spa Strummers will be in store playing 1960s hits and collecting money for Zoe’s Place baby hospice.

Music, food, displays, open top bus tours, canal boat trips and more will be on offer at the Sydni Centre from 1pm to 5pm, Fallow Hill from 3pm to 5pm, and there will be a barn dance at the church from 7pm to 9pm.

Sydenham History group will hold a launch event for its book A Celebration of Sydenham at the Sydni Centre on Tuesday from 7.30pm.

Entrance is free and books cost £4 on the night.
