Annual fundraising ball is named in memory of the man who gave so much

A WOMAN who was moved to start organising annual charity balls in aid of cancer research after family and friends were diagnosed with tumours is organising her fourth – this time in memory of her father who died this year.

Dougie Green was a well known builder in Harbury, built his house there more than 50 years ago - and, aged 80, he was still working and fit.

But he died aged 81 from an aggressive form of stomach cancer and his daughter Hayley Green, of Harbury, has renamed her fundraising event My Dad’s Do.

Money raised from the ball at the Stratford Manor, Warwick Road, near Stratford, on January 26, will be split between the Brain Tumour Research Campaign and the Aylesford cancer unit at Warwick Hospital, where Mr Green was treated.

Hayley, aged 42, said: “As soon as we walked into the Aylesford unit it was like walking in to join a wonderful family – beautiful, caring people, who wanted to try to make life better for you.

“My dad loved the staff there and received the most wonderful treatment.

“Dad loved these charity nights and he was my biggest advert. He would always tell people about the ball and would always have invites in his pocket.

“I hope to carry on the event every year, so long as I can afford it as I have always sponsored the whole event myself with my parents sponsoring the comic, so that the only money taken out of the ticket price is the three-course dinner cost.”

Tickets cost £50 and entertainment includes a 11-piece band, comedian and DJ.

Over the years £18,500 has been raised and helpers include Hayley’s mum Sylvia, husband Shaun, brothers, sisters and friends.

Hayley said: “I would like to thank everyone who has supported and helped us over the years. I couldn’t have done it without them and there are too many people to name everyone.”

The Stratford Manor gives free room hire and Hayley is hoping for donated raffle prizes and sponsorship. Last year she had help from Massey Ferguson, Cana wine importers and the Co-op store in Harbury.
