Attempts to limit impact of 12-week road closure in Warwick

TRADERS in Warwick are taking steps to ensure a lengthy road closure does not have an adverse effect on business.

Sewer mains replacement work, being carried out by Severn Trent, will take place between the junctions of Pickard Street and Wharf Street on the A445 Emscote Road from Monday August 13 to Monday November 5.

This could coincide with work to resurface the High Street and Jury Street main road through the town which had to be hastily finish to cope with mounting complaints from shopkeepers and ahead of the arrival of the Olympic torch.

Sue Butcher, chairwoman of the Warwick Chamber of Trade, said: “We are in talks to ensure that the diversion signs do not indicate that Warwick is closed and that sensible alternative routes are advertised well in advance.

“This will undoubtedly impact on the all important Christmas trade but perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to encorage buying locally.”

A diversion, which will take motorists along Rugby Road, Binswood Street, Clarendon Square, Clarendon Place, Dale Street, Adelaide Road, Avenue Road, Park Drive, Princes Drive, Myton Road, Banbury Road, Castle Hill, Smith Street, St Johns, St Nicholas Church Street, Coten End, and in reverse order, will be signposted but the chamber is hoping motorists will find quickers ways to get in and out of the town.

Mrs Butcher said: “It is so long-winded that we are sure most people will find a much better alternative.”

Sarah-Jayne O’Kane, a spokeswoman for Severn Trent has said: “We are talking to local businesses to see how we can limit any impact on them, and we will be sending letters out to local residents explaining what is happening shortly.

“Work will begin on August 13 and the road closure will be in place for 12 weeks.

She added: “All work is due to be completed before Christmas.”

Severn Trent has a helpline for people to call if they would like any more information about the works.
