Could Leamington become the capital of bowls?

ROYAL Leamington Spa Bowling Club in Victoria Park will be recommended as the venue for both the Women’s and Men’s National Bowls Championships from 2014.

The move would be a huge boost for the town, as the events attract thousands of visitors from all over the country.

Bowls England has announced that the recommendation will be voted on by the 35 counties forming Bowls England at the company meeting on Saturday November 24.

This decision was reached following the submission of a detailed feasibility study initially requested by the Bowls England Council - which the Courier revealed earlier in the year.

Warwick District Council has put £10,000 into an impact report in connection with the feasibility study.

The club in Leamington currently hosts the women’s event while the men’s event takes place in Worthing where Bowls England has its headquarters.

Peter Higgins, chairman of the bowling club, said: “We have discussed this quite a bit in recent months in terms of what the situation was going to be and what the impact was going to be and the club has taken great care to support its members.

“We are supporting Bowls England. It does have a duty of care to the club and it is a co-operation thing.

“It has taken note of all our concerns, it has addressed those, and members know what is going on because there is a lot to be discussed and changed. The championships would be here for a month and would have an impact on what is available to the club but Bowls England is aware of that.

“It is a challenge for both us and Bowls England and the club is looking forward to working with them and it has said it will work with us every step of the way.”

Should the counties vote in Leamington’s favour then the headquarters will also be relocated to the club.

Councillors are excited about the prospect of Leamington becoming “the centre for bowls in the country”.

Cllr Stephen Cross (Con, Warwick North), the councillor responsible for policy on culture, said: “This promises to be good news for the district. We look forward to positive confirmation by the company board in November and then to working with Bowls England to successfully locate both the men’s and women’s championships here as well as the company’s new headquarters.”
