Fashion film spies a winner

Vintage clothing and the world of espionage have been interweaved in a fashion film made in Leamington.

Called The Provocateurs, the short film focuses on four female spies dressed in clothing from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s and the 1980s.

Locations include the Campion Hills, Rhubarb wine bar and Country and Western singer Tammy Wynette’s former Winnebago motor home in The Assembly, to the less salubrious surroundings of the stairwell in the Covent Garden multi-storey car park.

It was made to showcase the vintage clothing sold by Leamington online retailer www.hickoryvintage.com

Sarah Hickman set up the business in 2012 and said: “I absolutely love it. The film has surpassed my expectations. It was shot over three days in December.

“We were standing in the not so pleasant smelling stairwell of the car park, but to see that location transferred onto film and lit in such a way, you forget about the reality of the environment.”

Sarah, of Leam Terrace, who sources her clothing from around the world using agents and wholesalers, said more interest has been sparked in vintage clothing because of the recession.

She said: “People are not prepared to go out and pay hundreds on a designer dress when for a more modest sum they can buy something that they know will not be on the high street.”

The film was also made to showcase the hair and make up expertise of Christina Jeffery, who works at Vogue in Tavistock Street, and the music composed by a Leamington artist who goes by the name of Beta Male.

It was produced and directed by Leamington film maker Lauren Midwinter, who went to North Leamington School and Binswood Hall sixth form.

She said: “The film evokes the mood of classic spy thrillers and celebrates female secret agents and fashion. Everyone involved wanted to produce a piece of work that showcased his or her talents and that would stretch the fashion film genre by incorporating a classic filmic style.”

More than 30,000 have viewed the film on www.hickoryvintage.com/fashion-film and it was placed on the Fashion Film Network’s top ten films in its first week of release, taking Prada’s number 10 spot.
