HS2 campaigners want consultation responses

ACTION groups against HS2 are encouraging people to take part in an important consultation which covers the compensation available to those affected by the project.

The groups, covering Cubbington and Offchurch, are delivering leaflets about the consultation to all homes in their communities and postcards which can be used as a ‘hassle-free’ way of responding.

A joint public meeting has been organised which will take place at Offchurch village hall in School Hill on Sunday January 13 from 3.30pm.

Kenilworth and Southam MP Jeremy Wright will attend.

Members of both groups will also attend a consultation information event at the village hall on Tuesday January 15 from 1pm to 8pm.

Peter Delow, chairman of the Cubbington Action Group Against HS2, said: “I am very pleased to be working together with our fellow campaigners in Offchurch on this important issue. The compensation proposals that the Government has published fall far short of what is required, and could leave many of our residents out of pocket when they come to sell their house.

“It is important that we leave the Government in no doubt that we are not satisfied with what is on the table and that a big improvement is required.

“We want as many people as possible to respond to the consultation, so that the Government will not be able to ignore us this time. “Full responses on the official response form, or by e-mail, or by letter, or on-line using the dedicated website are ideal, but the pre-printed postcards that we have produced offer a simple alternative for those who do not want to make a full response.”

Announced by the Government in 2010 the proposed HS2 high-speed rail project is expected to cost more than £30 billion.

Phase one will be built between Birmingham and London with part of the line going through the Warwickshire countryside including ancient woodland in Cubbington and the River Leam Valley.

Green belt land in the area around the junction of Coventry Road and Leicester Lane - the A445 - has been selected as a site for a construction compound for the project.

Work on HS2, if Parliament gives the go-ahead, is due to start in 2017.

The consultation closes on Thursday January 31 at 5.30pm.
