Let market forces determine HS2

In these difficult times, the taxpayer is more concerned than ever to know if HS2 is viable, though few believe it is, especially now the economic failure of HS1 has become known.

But there’s a fool-proof way to find out. Let the government hand over rights to build and operate HS2 to private enterprise. If it really is viable, they’ll find a company to take it on, and we’ll get any benefits the project can produce at no cost to the UK taxpayer. And if not, this daft idea will just fade away, again at no cost to the UK taxpayer, leaving well-deserved egg on the faces of its proponents.

What’s wrong with that, except that it denies HS2 fantasists the world’s most recklessly expensive train-set? - J.E.S Bradshaw, via email.
