Rent details should be made public

Having just returned from holiday today I was most interested in the article on the Warwick Racecourse rent written by your reporter Robert Collins.

I would fully support the details of any rental agreement made between Warwick District Council, (WDC), and Warwick Racecourse, and any other such agreements where assets of the district are being let out in order to gain income for the district as a whole, being made public. This, as any such assets, is held on behalf of the ratepayers of WDC and the information should be available to all ratepayers, to show that WDC is obtaining the “best value for money” on behalf of the people who elect them to run the district in the best possible manner.

Such openness would benefit all parties.

1: The councillors and officers of WDC could show that they are, indeed, obtaining the “best value for money” for all the residents of the district.

2: Residents and ratepayers could see that the above is being done and that all dealings are “transparent” and not “behind closed doors”

3: The lessee, (in the case mentioned, Warwick Racecourse), could show to everyone that that they are paying a reasonable rate for the land/premises that they rent.

Such openness could only help to build confidence in the workings of the council and encourage trust from those of us who pay our rates. - Peter Kerr, address supplied.
