Long Marston Airfield gyrocopter murder: accused remanded after court appearance

A gyrocopter pilot accused of murdering a Warwickshire Hunt supporter has been remanded in custody.

Bryan Griffiths, 54, of Wiltshire Close, Bedworth, appeared before Warwick Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on Monday.

He is alleged to have killed 48-year-old Trevor Morse at Long Marston Airfield on the afternoon of March 9.

The charge relates to an incident when Mr Morse was struck by the rear propeller of the gyrocopter, a small privately owned helicopter, which Griffiths was piloting.

The aircraft had landed to be refueled after being used to monitor a hunt in the area.

Mr Morse, a volunteer marshall for the Warwickshire Hunt and self-employed gardener, died "virtually immediately" from severe head injuries he sustained during the incident.

Neil Bannister, prosecuting, said there had been no application for Griffiths to be granted bail.

And Kevin Tomlinson, defending, said: "There is no bail application to be made today, although it is anticipated one will be made in due course and it is in preparation."

The prosecution papers were served on the defence and Mr Griffiths was remanded in custody.

The case was adjourned for a plea and case management hearing to take place at the court on May 27.
