Longer hours at Lillington library to remain
LONGER opening times at Lillington library will continue until April 2013.
Leamington Town Council’s policy and resources committee voted on Monday to continue funding three extra evening hours at the Valley Road library for a further six months.
As part of £2 million cuts, Warwickshire County Council last year proposed cutting opening times to 20 hours a week, but raised this to 30 as Warwick District Council shared the premises.
The town council voted in February to pay £1,750 to keep doors open until 6pm on Mondays and 7pm on Thursdays until September 30.
Figures show book borrowing has fallen by 20 per cent on Mondays and 42 per cent on Thursdays but the number of loans per hour has risen. A report by head of libraries operations Linda Smith said children doing homework might be benefiting from the longer hours.
It added that if these were removed, some customers might no longer be able to use the library. Both Labour and Liberal Democrats proposed continuing funding for a further six months.
