Olympic Torch Relay: The route through Warwick district is revealed
LEAMINGTON’s Parade and both Kenilworth and Warwick castles will be on the route for the Olympic Torch Relay when the flame is brought to Warwick district on July 1.
The torch will arrive by Stratford Road in Warwick at about 3.30pm before stopping at Warwick Castle and being taken along West Street, High Street, Castle Hill, Banbury Road, past St Nicholas Park and along Myton Road.
The convoy will reach Leamington at about 5pm, where the torch will be taken along Lower Avenue, Spencer Yard and Victoria Terrace and up the Parade.
Having reached Clarendon Avenue at about 5.10pm, the torch will be taken out of the town via Kenilworth Road, passing Beauchamp Avenue, Binswood Avenue, Lillington Avenue and Woodcote Road.
Arriving in St John’s Street, Kenilworth, at about 5.27pm, the torch will be taken through the town to reach Smalley Place at 5.35pm.
Photos will be taken at Kenilworth Castle’s car park from 5.43pm before the flame is taken from Castle Road, up Castle Hill and High Street and on to New Street and Coventry Road before it is taken to Coventry.
Warwick District Council’s officers have worked with the three town councils, sports clubs and other organisations, to organise family fun activities throughout the afternoon.
They will finish about an hour before the torch arrives in each town to allow spectators time to find a suitable spot.
Cllr Sue Gallagher (Con, Leek Wootton), the district councillor who is responsible for policy on cultural services, said: “The excitement is starting to build up now and we are really looking forward to welcoming the Torch to our district.
“We have so many activities and events organised in each of the three towns, we hope that everyone will be able to join in the celebrations, line the streets and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the inspirational Torchbearers into the district, at present we have two local Torchbearers we know about, Graham Fulford and Peter Frazier and we are very proud of their achievements.”
The torchbearers selected to carry the flame through the three towns include those who were successful through the public nomination process.
They will wear a white and gold uniform specially designed by Adidas.
Mr Fulford said: “This is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I still can’t believe I’ve been chosen from all of those people.
“It will be a fantastic day.”
