Patrols stepped up as girl is mugged in park

POLICE are stepping up patrols in St Nicholas Park, Warwick (pictured above), following a girl’s ordeal at the hands of two thieves.

The 12-year-old was returning home from Myton School and took a shortcut used by many pupils through the park and towards the river bridge.

She was walking on her own and as she got near the bridge she was looking at a video she had helped make at school. It was then the two men came towards her.

Without warning one of them snatched the phone and ignored her pleas for its return.

Her mother, who has asked to remain anonymous, said her daughter, who has special needs, was left traumatised by the incident.

She said: “They glared and sneered at her when she asked for it back and then they just sauntered off.

“She was left absolutely distraught. A woman found her on the path crying and phoned the police. Like most mums, I’ve told her always to be careful when she’s using her phone, but you know what they’re like when they’re that age. I’d just like to warn people about what happened to her and be careful when they are going through the park.”

The girl described the two men as having blond hair, one with a spikey, gelled cut and the other with a short style.

Both were said to be wearing brightly-coloured hoodie tops, thin, pale faces and one with sunken cheeks.

The girl said she thought they were aged between 18 and 24.

PC Trent McMurray, of Warwick Safer Neighbourhood Team, said they had been in touch with the school warning pupils to be on their guard going through the park.

He added: “We are going to do some extra patrols to offer some reassurance to those walking in the area.”
