ENTRY is now open for one of the area’s most popular fun runs – and the oldest competitor in the event’s history will be amongst the field once again.

Lewis Stephenson, of Milverton, took part in the Wright Hassall Regency 10k Run for the first time last year and finished in a time of 76 minutes, matching his age.

He had never entered such an event before but took part in order to help raise money for the redevelopment of St Paul’s Church in Leicester Street, Leamington.

Having enjoyed the event so much, he will be competing for the same cause again this year – with the added objective of finishing in less than 77 minutes.

Lewis said: “I decided to give it a go when our church entered a team to raise funds towards the £500,000 required for building work.

“That building was finished recently but there is still plenty to pay for so I will be running again.

“It was amazing really. As I approached the finish, people were crossing the line with a gap between them and because we had our names on our chests people were cheering our names and that really gave you added impetus.

“I was surprised at just how good it was so I am looking forward to taking part once again.”

Lewis will wear the number 77 in this year’s event on Sunday, April 7, after race organisers, the Leamington Round Table, decided to reserve it for him.

The 2013 Wright Hassall Regency 10k Run will be the ninth staging of the event and is expected to fill up fast.

Race organiser Russell Hall said: “People like Lewis are what this event is all about; having fun, staying active and raising money for good causes.

“Demand for places in the race has risen every year since the first event in 2005 and last year we had our biggest ever field with more than 2,500 runners signing up.

“I would advise those thinking of entering to do so quickly to avoid disappointment.”
