Second World War bomb found in Stockton vegetable patch

A WORLD WAR II bomb has been discovered in a garden in Stockton, causing parts of the village to be cordoned off.

The bomb disposal squad were called to carry out a controlled explosion.

The device was found when a villager was digging in their vegetable patch at about 4pm last Friday (August 31).

A police spokesperson said: “The device, described as a classic “bomb shape” measured just over a foot long and had fins at the back and what looked like a detonator at the cone (front) end. It measured about four inches across. Police attended and after seeing the device, set up a 400 metre exclusion zone while they awaited the arrival of the Explosive Ordnance Division who assessed the device.

“A local farmer was contacted and permission was sought to use his land to carry out a controlled explosion, and the device was destroyed at shortly before 7pm.”
