Warwick child rapist gets 15 years

A man who raped and abused an eight-year-old girl in Warwick has been jailed for 15 years.

Andrew Turpin, formerly of Lyttleton Road, betrayed a mother's trust after volunteering to take her daughter to play with other children.

The 42-year-old loner had pleaded not guilty to two charges of raping the girl on a date in April last year. He also denied three other charges of sexual activity with the child - and one of an earlier rape.

The accused was found guilty of all five charges at Warwick Crown Court in December. Following reports on the danger he presented to children, Turpin was sentenced at Coventry Crown Court this week, where the judge who heard the case is now sitting.

At the trial, prosecutor Sarah Buckingham had earlier said that Turpin lived in a ground floor flat in Lyttleton Road with his mother, and knew the girl's parents.

In April the victim was passed through the window of the flat on the understanding Turpin would take her to the home of some other children to play.

But a CCTV camera suggested they had not left the flat for 30 to 35 minutes, and the prosecution alleged the defendent had raped and sexually assaulted his charge during that time.

The girl later told her mother that "Andy" had been "naughty and rude" to her, but the mother only acted later when a friend was told about the youngster's allegation and became concerned.

Medical evidence and evidence later found at Turpin's home supported her original allegation and further claims were made during a subsequent video interview with the youngster.
