Warwick fire - man charged with arson
A MAN has been charged with arson in connection with a fire at a block of flats in Warwick.
Five crews were called to the scene in Rainsford Walk on Sunday at around 12.30pm. Twenty people were evacuated from the building, while four people had to be rescued from a home on the third floor.
Police officers were called to the scene by fire service staff who believe the fire was started deliberately.
They arrested 24-year-old John Ellard, of Newland Road, Leamington, on Sunday and he was charged with arson with intent to endanger life on Monday.
He was due to appear in court at Leamington Justice Centre today (Tuesday).
Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are particularly keen to hear from anyone who can confirm who was in the communal area of the flats before the fire started or anyone who saw a person running from the flats towards Lock Lane.
Anyone with information about the incident should call Det Con Gavin Hampton at Leamington police station on 415000 ext 4042 voicemail 10821 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
