New dance charity to bring community together

Mary Grigg is one of just 20 dance teachers in the UK to participate in the One Dance UK Mentorship Programme, after being nominated by other dance teachers as a future leader.

She has also been shortlisted for the Educator of the Year award in the Touch FM Pride of Warwick Awards 2016.

The 43-year-old - whose mentor is internationally-recognised movement teacher and Coventry University performance professor Helen Poynor - now wants to set up a community dance group for people of all ages and backgrounds at the Gap in Warwick, while she also hopes to work with the residents of the nearby Woodside care home.

Mary, who trained at the Italia Conti School in London, said: “Everyone can dance whether they are aware of it or not.

“I passionately believe that dance at its best is inclusive, democratic and has been shown to make a positive change, be it social, emotional or cultural.”

Mary’s mentor Helen has been heavily influenced by post modern dance pioneer Anna Halprin.

Mary said: “I want to bring this work to the people of Warwickshire so that we can experience dance as a community group and make beautiful work together.”

Mary, whose dance company is called KiTh - which means acquaintances, friends or neighbours, is preparing bids to apply for funding but would like to hear from any organisations interested in working with her, as well as from any musicians interested in getting involved. Email [email protected]
