American comedy drama Inside Llewyn Davis will be the first film to hit the new big screen at the council taxpayer-subsidised venue, which has spent the money on a new digital projector, higher quality sound system, improved high definition picture quality and the ability to stream live satellite events and 3D films.

Following the first screening on Saturday March 22, a regular and more varied programme will begin from April 4, featuring, says the Spa Centre, a mix of blockbuster, art-house, independent, family and classics films, as well as themed nights and streamed events from the National Theatre and Bolshoi Ballet.

There are also plans to set up a film club and the centre is in talks with other businesses to enable it to offer a greater selection of refreshments for cinema-goers, such as pizza.

Marketing officer Jo Lewis said “We are so excited to finally announce the re-launch of the cinema. The need to go digital was inevitable, but the cost involved to make the switch hasn’t been a decision taken lightly by district councillors.

“We are sure our loyal film customers will be pleased with the new system and we aim to attract a wider audience with our new film offering.”

Inside Llewyn Davis will be screened at 2.30pm and 7.45pm. Tickets £6.50 (£5.50 concessions). To book, call 334418 or visit www.royalspacentreandtownhall.co.uk
