Parents urged to fight against school cuts in Warwickshire at emergency meeting

The Warwickshire branch of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) will host the meeting on Wednesday April 5 at Dale Street Methodist Church in Leamington, starting from 7.30pm.

The meeting will focus on the Government’s new schools funding formula, which if introduced could result in the vast majority of Warwickshire schools having their budgets cut in real terms by the 2019/20 academic year.

It will be addressed by speakers from parent groups, school governors and teachers’ unions, as well as offering a platform for debate.

Andy Summers, press officer for Warwickshire NUT, said the aim was to allow parents to have their say and to hopefully create a parental pressure group which could help persuade the Government to change its mind.

He added: “No area of the county is safe from this crisis and the meeting in Leamington will be an opportunity for the public to learn more about the scale of the problem and discuss action to stop the Government attack on schools.

“This is the chance for parents who really care about the future of their young and are frustrated by the continual devaluing of their schools to make their voices heard loud and clear across the county.”

The meeting follows a letter from the seven major local secondary schools sent to parents asking them to write to their MP against the cuts or respond to the Government’s consultation on the new formula.

It was signed by the headteachers of Myton School, Trinity Catholic School, Kenilworth School, Campion School, North Leamington School, Southam College and Aylesford School.
