A Southam family who lost a loved one to cancer last year are among the thousands of people across Warwickshire taking part in this year’s Macmillan coffee morning campaign.

Margaret Freeman, with the help of daughters Becky and Sarah, raised more than £1,300 by holding a coffee morning last year in memory of her husband, while Margaret’s granddaughter has also braved the dizzy heights and jumped out of a plane to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, which runs its coffee morning campaign nationwide every autumn.

Margaret said: “My husband’s Macmillan nurse was absolutely brilliant. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a great way to give something back.”

The charity’s Coventry and Warwickshire branch is hoping that more than 2,000 groups, businesses, schools and individuals across the region will sign up to hold an event this year, so it can exceed its fundraising target of £189,000.

The branch’s fundraising manager Camilla Wood said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone, but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us.

“Last year we raised a record-breaking amount and we really hope we can repeat that again this year.”

The money raised from the coffee morning campaign will be used to fund cancer services including specialist nurses, a support line and grants for cancer patients.

The official date for this year’s event is September 26, but people can hold their fundraising event - which does not have to involve coffee - on an alternative date. To register, call 0845 602 1246 or visit www.macmillan.org.uk/coffee

Margaret’s coffee morning takes place at Fenny Compton village hall on September 20 from 11am to 1pm and will include a raffle and plenty of homemade bakes.
