Swimmers of all ages and abilities are being asked to join a charity swim on Sunday November 15 to raise awareness and money for military patients and their families.

a dedicated team of fundraisers will complete a sponsored swim and snorkel at Southam Leisure Centre in Warwickshire to raise funds for Fisher House, a ‘home from home’ for military patients and their families at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

The target is to collectively swim the 27-mile distance from the leisure centre to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham - a grand total of 1,781 lengths.

Members of Scuba Action Dive Group, staff from Southam Leisure Centre, teachers and students from North Leamington School, Flight Lieutenant Daryll Moreton with the Southam 2028 RAF Air Cadet Squadron will be among those swimming as many lengths as they can to reach the target.

The swim will take place between 1pm and 5.30pm and organisers are is hoping for at least 60 swimmers of all abilities to join the fun and help raise funds by swimming 30 lengths, or whatever they may be comfortable with.”

Event organiser Ray Kirton from Scuba Action who lives in Warwick said: “Last year’s sponsored swim raised more than £1,000 for Fisher House so this year we are aiming to raise £2,000.

“Most of the team have family or friends serving, or who have served, in the military. After giving so much for their country injured military personnel deserve all the help people can offer to achieve a good quality of life.

“My scuba group also supports the ‘Veterans Disabled Scuba Project’ which has been a great success at Fisher House. The programme helps veterans learn new sporting skills and progress positively in personal development, communication skills and teamwork.”

Sian Averill, fundraising officer at QEHB Charity, added: “Following the success of last year’s sponsored swim, we’re really excited to have the support of Scuba Action and friends once again. With the leisure centre, the school and other members of the local area getting involved, this showcases community fundraising at its finest!”
