Cllr Davies had the heart attack and collapsed while he was giving a speech in front of about 80 people at Warwick Mayor Bob Dhillon’s civic dinner at the Court House in Jury Street.

The council chairman’s wife Erica, a Kenilworth town councillor, said her husband was in a stable condition at University Hospital in Coventry while he awaits surgery.

Fortunately Cllr Dhillon and two nurses - Suzzette Smith who is retired and Julie Cook - were on hand to bring Cllr Davies round and administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation before ambulance staff arrived within seven minutes of the incident being reported.

A district council spokeswoman said: “Our thoughts are with Cllr Davies and his family and we wish him a swift recovery.

“An update on his progress will be given in due course.”

In the meantime Cllr Davies’ commitments will be carried out by vice chairman Cllr Clare Sawdon.
