An 83-year-old grandma from Warwick has been inspired to pick up squash after impressing a coach during her first ever attempt at the game.

Bimla Devi had not only never played squash, but she was also totally unaware of what to do with a racket when she accompanied her granddaughter to Freedom Leisure in Warwick during the week of her 83rd birthday.

But when offered a free trial session, she surprised everyone by taking to the high fitness sport straight away.

Coach Alison Insley said: “By the end of our session, she was able to bounce the ball on her racket, bounce the ball against the floor using the racket - and we even managed a 41-shot rally. It was wonderful to see.”

Bimla said: “I never thought I could play but I can. I can’t wait to play again. It’s so much fun. I’ve been practising balancing the ball and hitting the ball lightly up in the air. I try to practice every day.”

There are several female squash players at the leisure centre who play for Warwickshire County Ladies Over-40s team.
