Schools should be open and inclusive

Have your say

I was somewhat bemused to read TK Jerome (Courier last week) equating Humanism with Marxism. I imagine that the Conservative members of the 100-plus Parliamentary Cross Party Humanist Group would also be somewhat surprised.

He or she is also mistaken in assuming that opposition to faith schools is confined to the non-religious. The Accord Coalition set up to oppose them, includes church organisations of different denominations and at the last count a majority of the public were also against.

All for the simple reason that it is not the purpose of state-funded schools to propagate particular religious beliefs and ideologies. That is the job of parents and churches. Schools should be open and inclusive not divisive, and confine any mention of religion to comparative approaches to morality and ethics.
